Joy studied at Napier Technical College for two years. While there she represented the college at hockey, and participated in the chorus for two operettas. She then went to work for Standard Insurance. Early in 1939, whilst on holiday in Wellington, Joy arranged a job as receptionist at the Midland Hotel in Lambton Quay. Joy ha dalready met Len CHETWIN when he visited Napier on insurance business, and as he lived in Wellington, they continued their friendship. As soon as the war broke out, Joy and Len, who were by then engaged, brought their marriage forward. The ceremony was held at Karori, and Laura and David were their attendants. Some time after the birth of Mary and Robert, Joy went back to her career as a clerk. She now lives in a pleasant home at Raumati Beach.
