David married Laura in 1940. They then worked as a married couple on a farm in Blenheim before shifting to Wellington where David worked for the Harbour Board, and later as caretaker of the Wadestown School. Helen was born in 1941. David saw service with the Army in the Islands after Japan came into the war, but was invalided home with malaria. He was at Vella Lavella, called the Treasures, when he caught it, and was taken back to New Caledonia to recover before being sent home. He had several later attacks before fully recovering from the disease. David and Laura settled back in Hastings after David's discharge from the Army, and they had five more childres: Ian, Peter, Alan, Margaret and Barbara. David was head gardener for the Hastings City Council for 24 years. He was a Sunday School teacher at St James in Mahora and served on the Vestry. After David's retirement they shifted to Napier. David played bowls. He died at home of cancer in 1987 and was cremated.
