Winifred was a Londoner and had lived at Golders Green. She was a milliner and had one sister, Daisy, and two brothers, Jack and Fred. She and Arthur met when Arthur was invalided to England from France, and were married in London. When Peter married Cherry there was a falling out between Winifred and Cherry. There was a reconciliation but the relationship was never very harmonious. Winifred was very superstitious: no umbrellas inside the hosue, no acacia flowers to be brought inside, and many others. She was an aved card player, poker was her favourite, a housie enthusiast and a heavy smoker. After Arthur died, she sold up and lived with Arthur's sister Doreen and husband Maurice until her death from cancer in 1964. She had a colostomy shortly before she died.
