Manhole covers come with a great variety of patterns and imprints, but are almost universally circular in shape. Why is this so? Surely a square cover would be easier and more economical to produce? The answer lies in the fact that the circle has constant width – it is the same distance across in every direction. This means that there is no chance of it falling down the manhole – unlike a square cover.
