William moved to Hamley Bridge in 1903 to begin work as a carpenter with J. T. Quinn, the builder. In about 1917 he purchased the business from Mr Quinn. He ran this together with the undertaking business which had previously been owned by Mr Schaedal. In the early 1920s he expanded his activities by buying the brick and lime kilns situated on the banks of the Rover Light. Here large quzntities of red clay bricks were manufactured and sold, and a large number of men employed. In 1949 his four sons became partners in the business W. H. Durdin & Sons. William was a great lover of music and had a pleasant tenor voice. For many years he sang in the Congregation Church choir, and also became Vice-President of the Adelaide Harmony Choir. His greatest hobby was lawn bowls in which he became local Champion of Champions. [CANT Family History]
