Plymouth is in district East Stonehouse. James (called Ern) was born at 2 Chapel Lane, East Stonehouse. It is interesting that in the 1901 Census he is shown living (visiting?) in Cwm, South Wales. RM in British Navy Lived at Bilbrook, Washford, Somerset, and in 1912 at 5 Louise Tce, Deal (Albert Henry born there); in fact at Helena Hospital, Shorncliffe Camp. Was Lance Sergeant, RMLI. He and Florence were married at the Victoria Baptist Church, Deal.
Ern was serving on the new Royal Navy scout cruiser HMS Amphion at the outbreak of WWI. He writes that he was in charge of his own marines. As an extra duty he took on the role of school master and had 34 names on his school register. From this he earned 45/- a quarter! The ship was sunk at sea by a mine. It was the first RN loss in WWI.
