[The 1901 Census claims that Mary SCOTT was born in Newcastle, Northumberland. Tynemouth is close to Newcastle. Another birth certificate gives Mary ASH with no father and mother Ann ASH born 13 June 1859 in North Tawton, England. This appears to be an unrelated birth.] Mary married William SCOTTin Plymouth, Devon on 30th May 1880 in the East Stonehouse Parish Church. They had three children. The family lived in Plymouth until 1894. In 1883, the address was 2 Chapel Lane. They moved to Bilbrook, and bought Ivy Cottage. Mary was nurse and midwife for the village community. Mary was very strict, and often contrary. There was an orchard behind Ivy Cottage, and when son Ern was caught stealing apples, he knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of Mary's wrath. Mary had an old ear trumpet in later life, which she used as a weapon, and which became very dented! She suffered from deafness for many years. Once when Ern left his cabbage, he received only a plateful of cabbage for the next meal. In spite of her nature she appears to have been well liked. In later years Mary would stop the bus outside Ivy Cottage with a threatening wave of her stick, even though there was a bus stop just up the road. Sometimes she would call out to people walking past: "Aren't you coming in to see me?" She also threw her tea leaves indiscriminately out her doorway across the road; a local cyclist used to wait for the leaves to be thrown before proceeding in safety! [Ern MORSE]
