Sources: birth and marriage certificates (Mary ASH); marriage certificate; Ern MORSE.
Mary's marriage certificate gives seaman James ASH as father; but birth certificate gives no father's name. By 1858 James was a Mariner, probably working on boats going from Devon to Tynemouth to pick up coal. By 1861 he had moved back to Malborough and resumed fishing with his brother-in-law. In 1880 registered as a seaman of Stonehouse (Plymouth).
The family lived at Hope Cove, Plymouth, Devon. There were four children: Mary was the eldest, Sarah, Charlotte (Lottie), and the youngest was Elizabeth (Lizzie). Some descendants by the name of JEALOUS lived in Battersea. James was a fisherman, and he and his brother died by drowning. [Ern, Carol MORSE]
There is an account in the Salcombe Times of James Ash and Richard Partridge of Hope Cove losing their lives while fishing. Ash died while making an heroic attempt to save Partridge and his son Richard (aged 11) who was with them.
Richard Partridge (sr) was married to one of James’ sisters. [Carol MORSE]
