Misc. Notes
Amy was a loving friendly person, and a good cook. She was clever at school, receiving the DUX prize in Std VI in 1903 at Taradale School. She was a school teacher ("pupil teacher"). She grew up an Anglican, and was very involved in church activities. Sundays were regarded seriously: no-one was allowed to sew or play the piano. All the family were baptized except Bid. Ame taught Sunday School - it was her life. [Bid GRANT] Ame and Ern lived at Awatoto, and owned a horse and buggy in which they visited the Taradale cemetery weekly. She gave Thelma her 21st birthday party. Ern was a Baptist, and Ame started a Baptist Sunday School at Awatoto. Near the house was a "whare" (a rough prefab structure) where Alan slept. They lived in a small house with a nice garden on the seafront, although storms sometimes lashed the house. The house had two bedrooms, and a front porch which had been converted to a bedroom later. There was a coal range and a horsehair sofa in the living room. A gas stove was later installed in the kitchenette, but Ame preferred the range. Ern was a sanitary inspector. They were the first in the family to buy a car - a Model T Ford. They attended the Baptist church in Napier. Ame was very religious, and also involved with the Women's Institute.
