As a girl, Francis remembered going down to the beach and having her apron filled with tea from a wreck. Before marriage, Francis and Jane worked in a big house opposite Hyde Park gates in London. Francis married John BAKER in England, and had children Jack and Lily there. Arrived 1886 in Napier with sister Jane Mary. The BAKERs lived at Moteo, and the swingbridge had not then been built. Later John BAKER bought The Nook, Springfield Rd. The house was burnt down, rebuilt, washed down the river in 1897, then re-established. Two rooms were added 1915-16. They made a return visit to England about 1923. Jane lived with the BAKERs for a time: Letter: 'Crowly, Chislehurst, 15th May 1887. My dear Jane, ... I am so glad to hear that you have such a nice little home and that you are happy. Also that you are living with Mrs Baker. ... I can quite understand you not feeling very well. ... Hannah Richards.'
