FALLS II

Detailed Map:

There are easier ways of reaching Second Falls, but this is officially the ‘Second Fall Gorge Hike’ on the map. Arriving at the Top Car Park, at the start of the Main Valley Track we turn left, cross the bridge (#1), and begin the long steep acent.

There are nice little views down into the valley, including this (zoomed) aspect of the Giant’s Cave.

After climbing for 20 minutes we arrive at Deep View Lookout. I love this panoramic view of the valley. The dark patch near the centre is where First Fall is. The prominent zigzag path just to the left is the First Falls Plateau Track. This continues across the stream and can just be seen to the right of the Fall. The path on which we are standing will eventually meet the vertex of the < formed by the two paths at left of the photo. The lower downward branch meets the Plateau track at Eagles Nest Lookout. The upper track leads to Third Fall.

Ignore the trail that goes up behind the Lookout. Beyond the Lookout, our track becomes a little uneven, but remains fairly level, following the contours of the valley. Looking back, we can see it atop a steep precipice.

Even in summer there are many flowers to be seen including this wattle.

Arriving at the vertex of the <, we take the downward track at right. The tracks are generally well sign posted.

Having walked this high track there is some incentive to look back at it, as here. The Deep View Lookout is close to where the track meets the indented space!

Our track joins up with the First Falls Plateau Track at Eagles Nest Lookout – always worth a pause. Further on, we can look back at the spectacular position of this lookout. (Was that one eagle, or two?)

Reaching the First Falls Lookout, we can take a break, or turn left up the signposted track to Second Fall. Coming close to the fall, there is a made but unsigned track to the right from where one can take a photo of Second Fall (or of where it should be!). This little side track sneaks back along the creek to First Fall, so we rejoin the main track, continuing up to Second Fall.

Ducking under an inconsiderate grass tree ...

... we come to a further dividing of the ways. We take the right path which crosses the stream above Second Fall.

From the bridge there is an impressive view down the Fall to the valley below.

From here the path winds back around the valley, linking up with the First Fall Plateau Walk before coming to the Kookaburra Rock Lookout. We then descend to the Upper Car Park via the Giant’s Cave, or not, and so return to the car.
