MORIALTA : FOX’S DAM LOOP

Return trip : 1 hour 40 minutes, 5 km

FOX DAM

The starting point for this interesting loop track is at Gate 6 on Montacute Road, along the north of the reserve, about 1.5 km east from the Maryvale Road intersection.

We head up Chapmans Track.   It looks easy, but don't be fooled!   Half an hour of steep climbing ...

... interrupted for me by a koala wombling across the track in front, before giving me an enquiring look.

Finally we reach Moore's Road, where we head off to find the Fox’s Dam Track.   It is a great pleasure to be on a near level grade!

The road passes a clean up point for the local constabulary (?) ...

... before descending quite steeply, with a nice view of Hope Valley Reservoir.

The road comes to a gate, where an unsigned branch road to the right leads to this unexpectedly lovely sight, Fox’s Creek Dam.  A haven for the birds.

A little way beyond the dam is another surprise – a grassy meadow with resident magpie.

If I'd had my wits about me, I would have crossed it and walked up the short track to the pylon on top of this knoll.

The track is lovely as it descends back to Montacute Road.   There are valleys within valleys here, and one has to have faith that the constructor of the track knew where he was going!

Finally the track emerges at our starting point.

Just before the track reaches the road, it passes the top of this old concrete ruin which may be the remains of an old quarry construction.

Another enjoyable walk.
