Arthur was born in Truro, but the family moved to Caltowie after his father John's death. He drove a coach for Cobb & Co. At the coaching inn at Caltowie he met Nell Barrett and they were betrothed. Nell developed pneumonia and pleurisy and died aged 23. He met Nell's sister Miriam ('Little Nell'), then 16, and said he would marry her. To escape, he went off to the Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie gold rushes and caught rheumatic fever. He returned to SA to recuperate and courted Miriam. Soon after their marriage, Arthur and Miriam Matilda moved to Boulder, WA. (Doug was born there.) All the housing on the goldfields in the early days was built of timber and iron. Arthur worked for A Stubbs, timber and hardware merchant, Wittenoom and Boulder City, preparing and delivering timber to building sites. He worked there for at least 20 years, on one occasion injuring his leg. On their return to SA, they stayed with relatives, and later rented a house in the city for a short period. When Arthur obtained work at Port Adelaide, they purchased a house at Rosewater. Arthur was employed by the Port Adelaide Council, caringfor the horses and stables used in tht area, and was there until he retired. He died 7 Mar 1937. Miriam died at the house in Rosetta St, Rosewater on 17th Apr 1963. Both are buried in the Cheltenham cemetery. [Miriam FOREMAN]
