Misc. Notes
Albert(II) was a proud arrogant man. He resented Thelma and called her "Jimmy". In 1939-40, Thelma rushed up to him to show off baby Paul; he turned on his heel and ignored her. Thelma never spoke to him after that. Albert was 6' tall, dark, handsome, with big blue eyes. He always wore a big peaked cap. He served in WWI in Western Europe as a private in the infantry. He was discharged with an injury to his hand after falling on a duck board in the front line. After the war, he took a job on a cargo boat, and was often away from home. Later he became a brickie - a job he was good at. During this time he became ill and had a long convalescence. Sibyl took in baby knitting to earn some money. Albert drank, and Sibyl loathed the drink. Albert made friends with a railway man, and Sibyl befriended the man's wife. The train line went past the front door, and often there would be a "Toot", and lumps of coal would be tossed out. Together with driftwood from the beach, this supplied the family's heating needs. On a Saturday, Albert went to the Cosmopolitan Club to drink and play billiards, and at night sat down to a tea of pig's trotters! The family did not attend church. Around 1920, Albert bought a Buick car, and he and Sibyl went out driving. In the evenings, the family played cards (500) and ludo. The house had no electricity, and on Sundays the kerosene lamp came out. Albert and Sibyl were really incompatible, only getting married because they had to. [Thelma SCOTT]
